OpenAI Gets Promotional Boost from Apple, Not Payment
While Apple will integrate optional ChatGPT functionality into its new "Apple Intelligence" features unveiled at WWDC 2024, the company is not paying OpenAI any cash for this integration. Instead, the deal hinges on OpenAI getting paid with the massive exposure Apple will provide to ChatGPT across millions of devices worldwide.

This mutually beneficial arrangement allows no-cost ChatGPT access for Apple users in exchange for OpenAI's valuable visibility.
Similar to how Google pays billions to be the default iPhone search engine, the Apple-OpenAI deal currently relies on exposure rather than revenue share.
Apple will integrate optional ChatGPT into Siri, writing tools and more through its Apple Intelligence features.
Apple's own AI models will power the core experience, but users can optionally call out to OpenAI's ChatGPT on a per-request basis with privacy controls in place.
The partnership could evolve to include revenue sharing in the future as Apple explores similar large language model integrations with Google and others.
