Study Finds ChatGPT News Searches Unreliable

Recent testing by Columbia's Tow Center reveals OpenAI's ChatGPT search tool struggles with accuracy despite its confident tone, particularly in news-related queries and source attribution.

Details:

Of 200 tested quotes from 20 publications, ChatGPT gave incorrect info 153 times and only expressed uncertainty 7 times, showing false confidence
AI confidently cited content from publishers blocking OpenAI's crawler, highlighting issues with source verification
The system misattributed sources and linked to plagiarized content, failing to verify original articles

OpenAI acknowledged the findings but called them "atypical," saying misattribution issues are hard to fix without access to the study's full data and methodology.
