AI has outperformed human doctors, even with AI assistance, in diagnosing complex medical cases. A JAMA Network Open study shows ChatGPT-4 achieved 90% accuracy, surpassing both AI-assisted and unassisted doctors.

ChatGPT-4 scored 90% accuracy, while doctors using it scored 76% and those without it scored 74%. The study, involving 50 physicians and six challenging cases, ensured AI responses weren’t influenced by prior training.
Doctors often stuck to their initial diagnoses, ignoring better AI suggestions due to "anchoring bias," even when the AI's reasoning was strong.
Most doctors used ChatGPT like a search engine, not fully tapping its diagnostic potential. Few input complete case histories, revealing a gap in how medical professionals engage with AI tools.

The study suggests AI could become a valuable "doctor extender" offering second opinions, but integrating it into practice requires both tech advancement and a shift in how doctors use AI in diagnosis.
