Google Pays Samsung Massive Amount for Gemini Preinstallation

Google has paid for prime placement of its Gemini AI assistant on Samsung devices, as revealed in the ongoing antitrust trial. This move raises concerns about Google's AI distribution strategy amid its recent antitrust violations.

• Google is paying Samsung monthly to preinstall Gemini AI on devices like the Galaxy S25, where it’s the default assistant. Payments started in January, confirmed by Google VP Peter Fitzgerald

• The two-year deal includes fixed payments and a cut of Gemini’s subscription revenue. Competitors like Microsoft and Perplexity also pitched Samsung for AI placements

• The timing is key, as these deals followed Google’s antitrust violation over similar search engine deals. Court slides revealed Google considered even stricter bundling of Gemini with Search and Chrome, and only tried to amend its phone maker agreements last week

As Judge Mehta reviews remedies for Google’s search monopoly, the Gemini deal could sway the outcome. The DOJ is pushing for bans on default placement deals, the sale of Chrome, and licensing Google Search data.

xAI Seeks $20B in Second Largest Startup Funding After OpenAI

Elon Musk's xAI is seeking to raise $20 billion, valuing the merged AI and social media company at over $120 billion. This would be the second-largest startup funding, behind OpenAI’s $40 billion raise.
